Why does Canada have high GST and HST taxes?

Why Canada has huge HST and GST, while other countries have very small taxes. I find always less salary after all the taxes directly paid to Canadian government every month.

Hi, I want to tell you that Tax isn’t “so high” in Canada. Canadians pay some of the most competitive tax rates in the world. In fact, low income Canadians tend to pay less tax than low income Americans. Middle income Canadians tend to pay about the same as middle income Americans. High income Canadians pay more than high income Americans. On the other hand, Canadians get far more in government services for the taxes that we do pay. For example, if you combine what Americans pay in taxes with what they pay for things like health insurance, deductibles and co-payments which Canadians get through our taxes, Canadians pay less.

GST is only 5%. I don’t think that’s high at all. Some provinces add their own taxes and they are combined and called “Harmonized Tax” because the rule book is the same for both. That’s a fantastic time saver for the vendor/employer because they only have to deal with one tax system — not two. Note that BC rejected this and we have both GST and a separate PST with completely different rules and regulations. PST sucks from an administrative point of view.

GST replaced the hidden and poorly understood Manufacturers Tax. Consumers didn’t even know they were paying this, and it was 13.5% and then PST went on top of that. That tax-on-tax action doesn’t happen now.
