Are employment laws really that bad in the USA?

In the US, we really have no laws covering those areas. While some states have introduced a higher minimum wage, it’s still low pay. Long hours are a given, and sometime feel lack of good employment laws in America as much I know. Are employment laws really that bad in the USA?

I think, it varies a lot from state to state. “Blue” states that lean Democrat have pretty good laws that are union friendly, have a decent minimum wage, and require rest breaks and overtimes.

Many of the “Red” states that lean Republican have low minimum wages, “right to work” laws that make unions useless because they can’t require membership (which means people undercutting them) and few worker protections.

    However, universally

    • There is no minimum vacation requirement in most American states. None. You get statutory holidays and that’s it. Canada where most provinces mandate a two week minimum are still considered stingy by OECD standards, but the U.S. takes the cake.
    • Unlike other common law countries, the United States is largely an “at will” jurisdiction where your employment can be terminated without notice or cause.
    • Most health care is tied to your employment. If you lose your job, you lose your health care. Try affording private insurance when you’re unemployed.
